Mixology Monday: Amargo Agrio

Here we are again, back at everyone’s favorite monthly cocktail contest, Mixology Monday. It just gets the creative juices flowing, literally. This month’s theme is “sours,” and as such, I have gotten the lime juice flowing along with some other stuff. I have this bottle of Amargo-Vallet, which is sort of like a more potable Angostura bitters, the difference being Amargo-Vallet is made with actual bark from the Angostura tree and Angostura bitters is NOT. Not sure why, but there you have it. Anyway, I’ve been wanting to use this stuff creatively for a while, along with being obsessed with the ol’ sour-with-egg-white formula for a while. Amargo Agrio ✯✯✯✯1/2

2 oz Amargo-Vallet
3/4 oz lime juice
1/2 oz passion fruit syrup
1 egg white

Dry shake, add ice, shake again, and strain into a cocktail glass. Decorate with a few drops of Angostura bitters.

  1. Nice one, how did it tasted?
    Here in Brazil we have 1L bottles of Brazilberg (Underberg made with Brazilian herbs) and it tastes a lot like Ango too, I’ve been thinking about using it as a substitute on heavy-bitter cocktails.

  2. It is, you’re right. Kirk Estopinal’s Angostura Sour illustrates that well enough. I should have said “more potable,” and have updated accordingly. Thanks for the catch!
